The Rooney and Mansfield Rules: An Employment Law Perspective

Recognizing a lack of diversity in its leadership positions, several organizations have implemented “Rooney” or “Mansfield” Rules in their recruiting and promotion initiatives. The Rooney Rule, adopted from the National Football League, requires an organization to interview at least one minority candidate for leadership position vacancies. The Mansfield Rule, implemented by several law firms, requires a certain percentage of candidate pools for any leadership or governance role to be comprised of women or minorities.

Employers across industries are considering using their own form of Rooney or Mansfield Rule, but do not have a proper legal framework for evaluating these policies. In this webinar, we will discuss the evolution of these diversity initiatives and policies, the interplay of Title VII and other civil rights laws, and best practices for implementation.
