Payne & Fears LLP hires associate attorneys it believes can contribute significantly to the growth and development of the Firm, with the idea that each associate will eventually be eligible for partner. As with the summer associate program, new associates have hailed from top law schools and law firms across the country. Presently, new associates are first considered for partnership or principal attorney positions after eight years of practice.
Compensation & Benefits
Associate compensation levels at Payne & Fears LLP are competitive with, and often exceed, those of the major firms in the area. For new attorneys, Payne & Fears LLP also provides a summer bar stipend to cover the costs of the bar examination and moving expenses as well as the costs of living while studying for the bar.
In addition to compensation, Payne & Fears LLP offers a competitive benefits package that includes the following:
- An excellent 401(k) plan with employer contribution
- A health plan with one PPO and one HMO option and two dental plan options
- Group life insurance
- Long term disability insurance
- Pre-tax flexible spending accounts for childcare and healthcare
- Payment of annual state and county bar dues
- Paid parking or transportation stipend
Payne & Fears LLP prides itself on the training opportunities it provides for new associates. Associates are given major responsibility for matters, generally working directly with one partner on each case. This allows for a significant amount of hands-on training at an early stage of career development.
Payne & Fears LLP also provides formal, periodic in-house training sessions during which attorneys exchange ideas about the topic and recent developments in the law. The Firm also encourages attorneys to participate in seminars and presentations provided through outside organizations. Many of the Firm's attorneys actively speak and publish on various legal topics in continuing education programs for business executives, human resources professionals, and other attorneys. To ensure that training needs are being met, each new associate is assigned a more senior associate as a mentor.
Although the atmosphere and exchange of ideas are free and informal, associates receive substantive reviews on a regular basis. The Firm makes every effort to accommodate each first-year associate's choice of practice area; however, lateral associates are hired for specific departments only.
